Whenever you save up a large amount of cash, you have the choice to purchase or lease a vehicle. However, with an electric car there are other factors to consider. Choosing to drive a green car is an excellent decision for the environment but because electric technology is constantly innovating and evolving, there will be improved models on the market every single year. Unlike when you purchase a car, leasing would guarantee you have the latest technology in your electric car every couple of years.
In addition to this, you can avoid the risk of depreciation and not have to worry about how you’ll make your money back by selling the car. After your contracts ends, you simply drive the EV back to us while we provide you the best electric car lease deals to choose your next car from.
Due to relative new nature of electric cars, unfortunately they are not cheap to buy compared to diesel and petrol cars. But the answer to this question depends on what EV you are looking to buy. In recent years, the technology behind electric cars has trickled down to cheaper manufacturers who are making very affordable electric vehicles, such as the Skoda Citgo or Smart ForFour. Leasing a more expensive electric car can be an affordable option compared to purchasing it outright, as you would only pay the depreciation cost of the car which is often cheaper than the full price of the electric vehicle.
Although electric cars are generally more expensive than diesel or petrol, the running costs are very cheap largely because of the fuel savings. Driving electric for 100 miles would approximately cost £4-10, depending on where you charge your vehicle, while a petrol or diesel car would cost £13-16 in the same journey. Even though the difference may seem small here, the savings over a long period of time is a staggering amount. And now with the government setting up several emission zones, electric cars are completely exempt from the London congestion charge for example. If you are regularly driving through this zone, you’ll save £15 each time or a whopping £150 fine.
And that’s not all, electric cars are estimated to have 23% lower maintenance costs than other vehicles. The simple reason for this is because EVs are powered by less moving parts compared to a normal engine which has chains, belts and filters that we’ve all had the trouble of replacing.
As mentioned previously, the cost of electricity can depend on where you charge your car. The cheapest option is charging your electric car at home, but this is not necessary because there are over 10,000 charging points all over the UK. It’s completely dependent on your personal choice and situation but currently the government have an Electric Vehicle Home Charge Scheme set up which will contribute £350 to an installation of a charging point which is estimated to be around £1,000. If home charging is the option you choose to go ahead with, we’d advise you to have the best home energy tariff set up as the cost of charging is added onto your normal electricity bill.
What happens if my Electric Car runs out of charge while on the road? Luckily, you will be able to find a charging point close to where you are before your car begins to hit empty. The cost of public charging points varies on the speed; rapid charging points can be found at motorway service stations but are more expensive due it’s convenience. PodPoint rapid chargers are available at your local Tesco or Lidl at a more reasonable cost while lamppost chargers, the slowest option, can be found on residential streets - in London 1,300 streetlights were converted to EV chargers. As you can see, there is not a lack of options if you are desperately looking to charge your electric car.
Most electric cars can travel over 100 miles easily off one single charge with the average distance being 193 miles. Newer electric vehicles can do similar number of miles as petrol cars on a single charge with the Tesla S having an unbelievable range of 405 miles!
